Tactic A1.2

Understanding Recycling Capabilities

Build the tourism industry’s understanding of local recycling capabilities and ways to embrace.

Many tourism-related businesses in Sedona recycle plastic and paper and limit use of disposables.

There are opportunities to broaden participation and deepen understanding of recycling and recyclable materials. SCC&TB will team with Sedona Recycles and supporting partners to help businesses expand waste prevention efforts and reduce the volume of material directed to area landfills.

PROGRESS TO DATE

Understanding Recycling Capabilities
Build the tourism industry's understanding of local recycling capabilities and ways to embrace.

FY23:  As of the end of December, approximately 99.3 tons of total recyclable has been collected material from four City drop-off sites.
In honor of America Recycles Day on November 15, Sedona Recycles is hosting tours of their Shelby Drive recycling facility. Four tours scheduled throughout the day and are open to the public.

FY21: From July 1, 2020, until the end of January 2021, the quiz was taken 1,186 times. Since launch in FY 20, total participation is nearing 1,500.
The City of Sedona of Sedona’s partnership with Sedona Recycling led to an increase in funding, which the Center uses to elevate community services. The City of Sedona is also researching reporting mechanisms to improve city-wide recycling data collection.
The Center continues to support the zero-waste efforts of local events including the Mountain Bike Fest, Yoga Fest and Sedona International Film Festival.
In March 2021, a SCC&TB-produced press release sharing recycling information was sent to 796 media. The SCC&TB added the release to VisitSedona.com's Press Release page,  SedonaChamber.com as a blog and added a Sedona Recycles-related poster at the Visitor Center in April.

FY20: In 2020, Sedona Recycles introduced limited collections of Styrofoam, egg cartons, batteries and electronics, Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm at 2280 Shelby Drive, and electronics and packing materials on Wednesdays from 8am to 4pm. These are excellent opportunities for Sedonans to reduce potentially environmentally damaging products from entering the regional landfill and Sedonans have responded enthusiastically.
In June 2020,  Sedona Recycles was one of three presenters in a nationally promoted webinar on glass recycling sponsored by the Glass Recycling Coalition, enhancing Sedona’s reputation as a recycling leader. Sedona Recycles was joined by Balcones Recycling in Texas, the only other certified glass recycler in the U.S.
Sedona Recycles partnered with the City of Sedona and the SCC&TB to create the Sedona entry on the Recycle by City of Sedona website. The site is linked from Sedona Recycles and is being promoted to membership. It includes a one-sheet household guide on what is recyclable, and an entertaining quiz that tests residents’ recycling knowledge.
